Honoring Those Who Paved the Way

As we conclude Women’s History Month, I would like to express my gratitude to the incredible women who paved the way for future generations. One of the most memorable conversations I ever had was with my mother-in-law, a true pioneer in her field.
She served as a corrections officer in New York during the 1960s, a time when women in law enforcement faced immense challenges. She once shared a story that perfectly captured her resilience and strength. While walking through the prison one day, an inmate decided to hurl fecal matter at her. Without missing a beat, she tackled the inmate and returned the favor. That moment taught me two important lessons: first, never mess with this woman, and second, that women like her have fought tirelessly to ensure the opportunities we have today.
Women in corrections had to perform the same duties as their male counterparts, working in both male and female facilities. However, they faced additional hurdles—forced to do their jobs in skirts, pantyhose, and heels, all while being paid less. Despite these obstacles, they stood firm, fighting for equality and winning small but significant victories along the way.
Today, I stand in awe of these trailblazing women and the men who supported their fight for fairness. Their perseverance and courage have shaped a more inclusive and equitable workforce. As we close out Women’s History Month, let’s continue to honor their legacy by supporting each other in all fields.
To the women who broke barriers and the men who helped them rise —thank you. Your strength and resilience inspire us all.
